It is with the greatest pleasure that I welcome you to John XXIII College!

My name is Janet Mills and I have been elected as your Residents’ Association (RA) President for 2008. The role of the RA is to provide you with endless opportunities in all the facets of college life including sporting, cultural, social and musical and to ensure that your time here at Johns is unbelievably amazing.

There is no need for me to try and convince you that John XXIII College (Johns) is the best College at ANU because you have already chosen Johns and Johns has chosen you. So I won’t waste your time telling you about the fact that we won the sports shield for the sixth year in a row, the rugby league for the ninth, or that we are the champions in guys cricket, girls cricket, road relay, guys touch footy, girls touch footy, girls tennis, girls hockey, guys basketball, girls basketball, girls soccer and guys volleyball or our multiple victories in debating, public speaking, chess, pool, art shows, and talent shows or the fact that we dominate the social scene or that we are definitely the superior college when it comes to cheer squads, support for one another or the fact that we have more fun than a fat kid with a cup cake, so I won’t bother mentioning it to you.

However, I will mention the thing that does separate us from the rest, the Johns spirit. A spirit that unites the College ensuring that our success is not only measured by the number trophies in our cabinet but also by the way that we support one another, look after each other and encourage one another to excel in whatever it is you choose. It is this spirit that is the envy of all other colleges and halls. So lets ensure that Johns continues to be the community that everyone compares to, the community that others want to be a part of, the community that stands out. This spirit is integral to all the events the RA holds throughout the year including:

  • The Annual College Ball
  • Interhall Sports Shield
  • Interhall Arts Shield
  • Multicultural Week
  • Annual College Play
  • Tavern Nights
  • Out The Back Days
  • The Publishing of the Annual Magazine – Pontifex
  • Parents Weekend including the Charity Auction

The events are there for you – and remember, they are only as good as you make them.

Coming to university and to Johns is the beginning of a new stage in your life. Everyone here at Johns is considered equal and it’s what you make of it that will determine how enjoyable your time here is. There are so many opportunities here at Johns that life should never be boring, in fact Pete Murray talks up life at Johns saying ‘your only fear is possibility’. So to get the most out of your time at university you need to find the balance between excelling at university and life outside of the books, and there is no finer opportunity to do this than here at Johns.
