TONI SMITH – Deputy Head of College and Head of Student Services Bachelor of Science (Criminal Justice)

Toni joined the Johns family in August 2018.   She had been working in Residential Life for 13 years in the USA, Victoria and Western Australia.

Toni has responsibility for Student Services and as such oversees the provision of pastoral care, academic support, pastoral care support and guidance to the residents.   She has responsibility for the maintenance of discipline and good order at the College in consultation with the Head of College.   Toni also manages the Student Leadership Program, the training and supervision of the student leaders and the Resident’s Social Club and has overall responsibility for development and implementation of the cultural, social and academic life of the College.

JEREMY MUTTON – Dean of Residents

Jeremy joined John XXIII College at the beginning of 2017 as the Dean of Residents.  He was a recent graduate and has professional experience in exercise physiology and workplace rehabilitation.

The Dean of Residents is a live-in, full time staff member and assists the Deputy in the disciplinary and pastoral care matters and in the provision of programs and services that enrich the residential life of the College.  These programs include the Pastoral Care Support Program, the Academic Support Program, Living-Learning Community Program and Student Leadership Program.   The Dean collaborates closely with the Student Leaders, Deputy and Student Experience Officer to provide the support and services that assist in the total development of the residents and enrich the residential life at the College.

TANAE EATON-JONES JP – Student Experience Officer

Tanae has been working at the College since 2016.

The Student Experience Officer works with the Deputy to help plan and prioritise student activities and events in the College.   She also works with other staff to plan and run Induction and O Week activities for the residents.  Her responsibilities include:

  • organising and running College events, activities and student activities;
  • helping the Senior Residents (SR) in organising and running Portfolio events and Corridor activities;
  • helping the Academic Advisors (AA) in organising and running Career events and general education activities;
  • assisting in guiding the planning of the resident’s Social Club events and activities.

SAM GILL – Counsellor Bachelor of Social Work, Management and Counselling

Sam is a Social Worker with over 17 years experience as a counsellor.  She specializes in crisis work, trauma, mental health, suicide prevention and postvention. Sam is passionate and interested in research and policy development, along with face to face therapeutic intervention, to help support and improve individual’s well-belling and provide psychoeducation.

The Counsellor provides support to:

  • the student leadership team and debriefs them after they deal with pastoral care concerns.
  • the Student Services Team to provide advice on psychological issues and to assist in general education sessions and training.
  • residents identified as “at risk” and to the general resident body who are dealing with personal and relationship issues.


Shay started with us in late 2018 and Andre joined us at the start of 2019.

The Night Porter is employed in the evenings to provide additional security at the College and to provide assistance to the Duty Senior Resident as they deal with concerns during the night.
