Wes Bonny Memorial

Wes_BonnyWesley James Bonny (Wes) was a resident of John XXIII College from 2001 to 2003.  Whilst at College he was involved in a variety of sports and social events, excelling particularly in AFL.

In 2007, Wes had a melanoma removed from his neck. Over the next two years, Wes bravely fought a battle with cancer. He passed away in March 2010, aged 26.

Since his passing, ex-residents have returned each year to play a game of AFL with the current residents of the College. The game celebrates Wes’ life and continues the friendships between past and present residents at the College he loved so much.

John XXIII College hosts the annual Wes Bonny Weekend – a weekend gathering that has increased in importance as the College reaches out to Alumni from recent and not-so-recent years. The previous three years have been fantastic and we are hoping to get a huge turnout to catch up with old friends and to support a wonderful cause. This year, there has been a Focus on expanding the Memorial event, with a girls’ Netball game being played as well.

Wes_Bonny2Whilst it is important that we don’t forget the original purpose of the event, — to commemorate Wes’ life — the game presents a great opportunity for current residents to meet and get to know ex-residents of the College, to share knowledge, experience and stories.
