STUDENT WELLBEING

Keeping you happy and healthy

Being a university student is a new experience and there may be times you feel a bit overwhelmed or anxious.

J23 is here to help you through these stages with a range of support services available. From home sickness, study stress, managing relationships and mental health – we are here to support you. We want you to get the most from your time at university underpinned by a happy and healthy experience.

  • The Senior Residents

We have two appointed senior residents (SRs) for each corridor in J23. They have received training across medical and mental health first aid, recognising residents who may be experiencing physical, emotional and mental health issues and providing that initial support. They are here to be the first point of contact for any resident needing advice and are trained in critical incident management.

  • Student Services Staff

When further support is required, residents can speak with the Deputy Head of College, College Life Manager and Dean of the college for advice on a range of topics.

If the staff don’t feel they are best placed to help a resident, they may discuss using the counsellor or another professionally qualified person.

We want to provide you with the best university experience, so please share any mental health history with us so we can make sure you’re settling in well and thrive. We take your privacy seriously, and you can see our privacy policy here.

  • The Counsellor

Any resident may choose to make a booking to request an appointment with the College Counsellor to discuss any personal or mental health issue. The Counsellor can give you some general advice or assist you in developing an ongoing care plan. They are also able to refer residents to long-term counselling when necessary as well as provide advice on accessing ANU counselling services.

  • Pastoral Care Support

J23 sees its pastoral role as an important part of its identity as a caring community and the need to look after the residents’ wellbeing.  We’ve set up a pastoral care system that is considered best practice across any university.

  • General Education Program

The SRs as a group also organise a variety of activities and educational sessions, with the assistance of the College Life Manager and Dean to improve the College community and assist the residents in adapting to life at university and in our society.

    Some of these talks include:
