The verdict relating to the case from 2015 involving the College that Catholic Church Insurance had appealed was handed down today. It can be accessed via the ACT Supreme Court website.
Importantly, we feel a strong sense of compassion for all who have been affected by this case and recognise the enormous impact it has had on all involved and especially the young woman and her family. Whilst this event happened some time ago, it is imperative for the College to acknowledge these issues and most importantly stand with survivors and continue to strive for a connected community of care and aspiration where every individual is known and valued ensuring we support them to feel happy, healthy and safe.
We believe this case and appeal reaffirms the behaviours and actions that the College holds itself to account for today. This includes genuine responsibility for residents and staff alike around safe events, education, support and accountability relating to issues of harassment, assault and culture more broadly. All of this is done utilising ANU support structures aligned with our own policies and procedures.
The structures of support, including an excellent student leadership team, a large staff team who are fully invested in the student journey and who run active education programs in line with ANU and external providers, as well as our College Counsellor who works closely with our community, assist as to remain committed to student safety and to working to be at the forefront of best practice. These resources, coupled with a culture that the community embraces of diversity, inclusion, tolerance and care is one that John XXIII prides itself on.
If there is anything that is affecting you personally, please do not hesitate to reach out to the numerous support structures and people in place at College. We are all here to help.
