It was an honour to welcome Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Professor Grady Venville as our esteemed speaker, who shared her remarkable insights in achieving success in life, and to find passion in the things that drive us to succeed.

First Year Matriculation Dinner

A warm Johns welcome to our first-year students. An evening of firsts. An evening of forging new friendships and creating lasting memories.

We were blessed with an inspirational welcome address by Professor Kate Reynolds. Her words and message indeed resonated. The words of encouragement shared by Head of College, Jas Lincoln and the heartfelt welcome delivered by RA President Charlotte Versace made for a memorable evening.

We bid a sad but fond farewell to our 3^rd year and 2^nd year students who are leaving the College at the end of the year. We celebrated our outgoing President, Josie Bates, and we welcomed in our 2024 President Charlotte Versace.

Ex Ressie Damon Reynolds was recognised for his contribution to the College, and he was accompanied by partner and former President (2021) Zoe Reeve.

IB23

Twenty-six Johns students and two ex Ressies participated in IB 2023 over 7 – 8 October 2023. After months of training and preparation the tenacity, spirit and sportsmanship of Johns culminated in an amazing race to the finish line. We congratulate all who participated and thank the support teams who so willingly helped to ensure that our participants were trained and ready and welcomed back at end point.

Parents Cocktail Evening 2023

A perfect venue. A stunning evening. Over 600 parents and students of John XXIII College joined us at the National Arboretum on Saturday 23 September for the annual Parents Cocktail Evening. RA President Josie Bates gave an inspiring and heartfelt speech about her time at the College, and then the Johns Band, led by Louis Sturm and DJ’s Kai and Robbie kept us entertained. The musical talents of both the band and DJ’s certainly got us dancing the night away. Parents Weekend is a highlight on the Johns calendar, and it was lovely to see so many of our parents and students attend.

An incredible interpretation of Neil Simon’s RUMORS play production at Merici College - produced by students Bailey McConaghy and Jasper MacNevin and showcasing the theatrical talents of our Johns students. Parents Weekend

From start to finish, a highlight on the Johns calendar. We started the day with the memorial Wes Bonny Soccer Match, followed by the production of Neil Simon’s RUMORS at Merici College and we ended the night at the National Arboretum. We are thankful and grateful to all our parents, students and invited guests who joined us for the annual Parents Weekend in Canberra on 23 September 2023.

John XXIII Academic Dinner, Semester 1 2023

On 23 August we celebrated our students’ academic achievements from Semester 1, 2023. The academic dinner held at the College was an opportunity to congratulate all our students on their successes. A special mention to Anna Miller on being awarded the Infinity Medal, donated by Casey White on behalf of his family.

Our guest speaker, alumnus and board member, Michael Lee gave a speech which was earthly if not humbling and the overarching message and was truly inspiring.

Ladies we Love Lunch

Ahead of mother’s day 2023, the amazing and phenomenal mothers and significant women in our students lives joined us at the College for a cocktail lunch. We were excited to welcome close on 400 attendees to what is fast becoming an annual event. Our Heads of Charity, Claudia Petrie and Tom Perissinotto held a charity raffle and the monies raised will go to support Mackillop House, a home and safe haven for vulnerable women and their children.

Our heartfelt thanks to the Johns 23 band (lead by Louis Sturm) for their musical performance, as well as all the heartfelt speakers. And as always, the Johns Catering team for the delicious food.

John XXIII Academic Dinner, Semester 2 2022

We celebrated the wonderful academic achievements from Semester 2 2022 at our bi-annual Academic Dinner at the College on Wednesday 17 May 2023. We are grateful to our Johns Alumni, Damon Reynolds, Lauran Clifton and Liv McKay who joined us and participated in an engaging Q&A panel led by Head Academic Mentors Anna Miller and Kai Saalmann.

Congratulations to the 34 students who received distinctions and 9 students who achieved high distinctions.

John XXIII Grand Re-Opening 2023

After many years of planning, design and construction. Of months of dust and noise and staff working in demountable offices, the College commemorated the official re-opening of the main building on Thursday 13 April. We were joined by a number of guests, current and former Johns staff and students and special speakers to mark the occasion. We were grateful that Board Chairman, Mr John Harris, the Very Revered Father Dominic Murphy Prior Provincial Dominican Order and Professor Grady Venville Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) from ANU were able to join us at this special event.

This Wednesday, Johns held our semesterly Academic Dinner for Semester 1 2023. A night where academic achievements from the previous semester are recognised and celebrated by our community. 👏👏👏👏 It was incredible to see the hard work of our residents on display, at a lovely dinner graciously hosted by our Johns kitchen staff. Johns alumnus Michael Lee delivered a particularly pragmatic speech on the night; discussing the variances of privilege and entitlement. The key takeaway from his speech being how to utilise our effort and privilege in actioning towards the greater good. 🫶🌏🙌🙌🙌🙌 Notably, a big congratulations to Anna Miller, our Head Academic Mentor, for her achievement in receiving the Infinity Metal, presented by alumnus Casey White on behalf of his family. Representing the Johns leadership team, President Josie Bates and Head of Charity Claudia Petrie attended the ANU’s Mana Wāhine Discussion. Mana Wāhine, as interpreted in Māori as “powerful women” or “women of strength” encapsulated perfectly the evening’s celebration of female leadership, integrity and wisdom. Dame Jacinda Ardern, ANU Chancellor Julie Bishop, actress Rena Owen and Olympian Bronte Campbell formed an engaging and diverse panel, enlightening the audience with their experience in their respective fields. One key takeaway resonating with our leaders from the night: “Have the courage to listen to your heart and follow your passion. Today is Reconciliation Day, a day which falls in reconciliation week which aims for the ACT community and broader, to come together to learn about First Nations cultures, achievements and history. The theme for this year’s Reconciliation Day is “Be a voice for generations”. Brooklyn Brougham, second year Johns ressie was asked what reconciliation day and this year’s theme means for him. “As an indigenous person reconciliation day embodies the resounding echoes of our ancestors and the unspoken dreams for generations yet to come. We honour our elders and ancestors’ struggles and pave a path towards a reconciled tomorrow.” The artwork pictured above by Canberran and Ngunnawal, Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi artist Lynnice Church, entitled “Reconciliation,” represents the Ngunnawal Tribe of Canberra, Queanbeyan and the surrounding region and the coming together of people on Ngunnawal Country.

Congratulations to Board Member and College alumnus Mr Michael Lee, who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on Australia Day 2023. The Order of Australia recognises the outstanding and meritorious service of our nation's citizens. The citation for Mr Lee's award is: 'For service to education'. The College is immensely proud of Michael and we offer our congratulations on this huge achievement! Michael will be holding a session on culture and leadership with all College leaders next week and we thank him for his continued support of John XXIII.

We had one hell of a week of sport to wrap up the Term. Firstly, a stand out result from the girls netball team who won their grand final! A huge congratulations to all involved. Next up with the boys AFL coming in second place who put up a fierce fight against Bruce, as well as the girls Soccer against Wright with a super close score of 1-0. We are extremely proud of 2nd year leader Josie Bates who was awarded the CECS Advantage Scholarship from the College of Engineering and Computer Science at ANU. The scholarship's purpose is to increase female participation rates in the Engineering field, especially among females from rural or regional areas. This is reflective of Kim Jackson, the donors' experience of coming to ANU. Kim came from the small coastal town of Yeppoon in Central Queensland and was only one of a dozen females in her engineering cohort. The scholarship empowers females like Josie and reflects the journey institutions such as the ANU are taking, in becoming more progressive and equitable, through actively engaging and supporting women interested in the STEM field. $25000 Gift to MacKillop House Friday was a special day for the College as we deposited $25000 to MacKillop House, a women and children’s refuge, which helps towards upgrading the security system for the women and children who reside there. Pictured are Sr Noelene Quinane from Mackillop House with Rich O’Brien, last year’s Head of Charity (and Collegian of the Year) who commenced the fundraising activity as well as this year’s Heads of Charity Imi Holly and Erica Lehm who have continued the hard work in 2022. This gift is testament to the generosity of spirit and outstanding support of the broader Johns family. We look forward to our continued partnership with MacKillop House as we support these vulnerable women and children in their quest to complete the upgrade fully.

Congratulations to 3rd Year student, Harry Wetherill who has just received the Defence Nuclear Science and Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship. Harry now has the opportunity to work with the Defence Science and Technology Group learning about how Defence works with industry and academia. Harry has always had the goal to work on nuclear submarines so this is a dream come true.

On April 23, Johns Alumnus, Andrew Regan suffered a severe spinal injury, while playing rugby for his local rugby club, the Orange Emus, in Central West NSW. Andrew, or Reegs, as he is known to his friends and family, was airlifted to Royal North Shore hospital in Sydney and underwent emergency surgery. The last couple of weeks have been extremely difficult for Andrew and his wife Jessie, also an ex Johns ressie, and their 11 month old son, Gus, while they come to terms with Andrew’s injuries, which have left him an incomplete quadriplegic. However, Reegs has shown incredible resilience and positivity, which he was known for during his time at Johns. Andrew’s best friend from College, Matthew Stewart, has created a Go Fund Me page to support the road ahead for Andrew, Jessie and Gus. Over the weekend, Johns Current and Ex-Ressies played against each other in the Annual Wes Bonny Memorial AFL game. It was a great day with a charity BBQ and a wonderful turnout from the whole of the Johns community. It was a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness about the risk of Melanoma to everyone especially our youth; so remember to check your skin ☺️

Despite the 2021 ISO season being cut a little short due to the return of covid 19 to the ACT, Johns was able to put on a tremendous display of talent and true sportsmanship by coming first in Men’s touch, Women’s hockey and Men’s rugby sevens. All other sports were highly competitive for Johns resulting in us coming first place on top of the ISO sports table with a solid 184 points. Congratulations to all the players and coaches involved and we look forward to what lies ahead next year. #GoJohns

Random Act Of Kindness (ROAK) week is finally here, but instead of being over one week, we’re doing it over two🥳 For the next two weeks students are assigned a random resident to indulge. By writing letters or buying small gifts the aim of these weeks are to simply make everyone’s day a little bit better☺️ See below for some of the gifts given last year. G’day guys! These current times of lockdown aren’t easy, but they’re important in making sure we get back to doing what we love. Right now more than ever it’s key to have your mates back! To ensure both their physical and mental health remain strong; so here are some helpful tips to win the day! o Keep active - try online exercise classes, run on the spot to music, jumping jacks or stretching. Even try teaming up with your mates to do some zoom fitness challenges, think planks, wall sits etc. o Eat healthy –healthy “grab & go” snacks like bananas, wholemeal crackers and have a water bottle at easy reach. o Stay connected – humans need humans, so call up a friend, facetime your family, have zoom catch up with friends at another college, play poker on line with your mates via zoom, and make sure to add a bit of humour to it; use the filters and wear something silly. o Stick to a routine – create a plan each day, exercise at the same time so you can create a sense of structure. o Monitoring your mental health & wellbeing – COVID-19 is a challenge for us all, reach out for support if you need it. All your SRs, admin team and mates are here for you. o Set aside some quiet time and relax – read a book, do some yoga, learn a new skill like crocheting, learn a new language online, make a video for your friends

Great to have most of the John’s family back at home in time for Bush Week! Last night at the Croatian Club all the Ressies were put into a ‘family’ of two 2nd/3rd years and two first years to dress up together into a theme 🎭 Shoutout to - Felix Clarkin - Grace Barwick - Mia Anderson - Noah Stevenson for winning the best dressed family. We are extremely proud of our students heading up the amazing Civic to Surf later this year, all in aid of Batyr. Our students will lead many others making the trek on foot from the ACT to Bondi supporting a wonderful organisation created by an alumnus of John’s, aimed at ‘smashing the stigma’ around mental health. A proud day for the College.

On Saturday the 19th, TJ and Richo went to the launch of the Canberra Pink Sleepbus. The Pink Sleepbus is Australia's first sleepbus dedicated to women and children experiencing homelessness and domestic violence, and will be operating in Canberra. The sleepbus is a functioning bus fitted out with beds, toilets, air conditioning and other amenities. The Pink sleepbus provides a safe place to sleep for women and children experiencing homelessness and domestic violence. John XXIII College is currently looking at ways to support the sleepbus program, with opportunities for residents to volunteer starting next semester. It was great that Richo land TJ could be there to celebrate the launch last weekend!!!

Yesterday one of the great Johns Vs Burgmann showdowns took place, both teams gunning for the Women’s Hockey Premiership. After the game ended nil all, each side chose their five best players to take into a penalty shoot out, firing away in attempt to take the 2021 Girls Hockey Finals 👏👏 Final score 11/12 Johns way, great work girls !!

Last night we were given an opportunity to celebrate the great achievements of our academic superheros within the College! Guest speaker Professor Grady Venville (Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic) and musical duets performed by Residents Dan McNamara and Ella Edwards-Smith made for a truely inspiring night. Recognising all the outstanding academic achievements of our J23 Ressies fuelled us with the motivation we needed heading into the final weeks of exams for semester 1.📚

The guys team winning a double over time thriller for 3rd place and the girls team narrowly missing the trophy by a point to BnG. John's has a close relationship with Vinnies in Canberra, with residents volunteering in many Vinnies programs. In these photos, ressies are volunteering in the Migrant and Refugee program at Florey Primary School, which helps children from a migrant or refugee background with reading and writing English. Ressies are also volunteering with the Night Patrol program, which provides food, drink and companionship to the disadvantaged members of our Canberra community. Excited to see more J23 ressies supporting these programs in the future 🐣

☕️ Johns X Burg High Tea ☕️ Although it may not seem that we love Burgmann on the sports fields or debating halls, at the end of the day we’re great mates who are passionate about supporting equality. Which was exactly what we saw yesterday afternoon at the Johns X Burgmann Women’s High Tea hosted by @tabooanu. The core focus of the afternoon was to raise money and awareness for Period Poverty led by Taboo; an organisation striving to provide greater essential sanitary care to Women in developing nations. Together through the raffles we raised over $2000; an amazing effort by all, especially Alex Gray-Bekier and Charlotte Collier who organised for such a smooth event. Finally, thank you Julie Hare (past editor of ‘Broad Agenda’, publication of the 50/50 institute University of Canberra) for a memorable speech that brought us all together! Touch Footy Finals Day! Willows oval was looking more like a slip n’ slide than a footy field today with both the guys and girls sliding over the try lines to record two great wins. It truly was the enthusiastic and supportive family on the side that helped us get over the line with the guys coming 1st overall and girls 5th🏉
